Hey guys,, I have a 93 Bonnie ssei, I have a engine code 57 for boost control. This car was kind of a basket case. I have thrown a bunch of money at this car and this is my last issue. If I roll on the throttle slowly the car seems okay. But if I really Goose it the engine light comes on and flashes code 57, the car stumbles and it just doesn't feel like it's all there? I have replaced the BSC solenoid and made sure all the linkage and BSA valve is all working correctly. How does the ECM even know I have a boost control problem ?

Can you get a live data scanner on it? Since you already replaced the solenoid, the next thing would be to see if there is a bunch of knock that makes the engine want to dump boost. If you roll in slow, how high does the boost gauge go?

Its hit and miss. Somtimes its almost full boost, other times its surging and the boost is fluttering. Im wonering if the bost valve triger wire is half broken somwhere? It will click when grounded at ecm.. i was wondering about the ecm logic and when it comands a boost dump? You mentioned knock sensor? I thought i was based on tps and tranny shifts?

If the bcs just helps keep the bypass closed then if the ecm if comanding actuation under full throtle would the bypass valve open without any vacume on the vac pot?

It seems to be temp related as well? If i drive the heck out of it falls flat almost everytime. If just crusong it goes like hell 50% of the time? No other codes. Its frustrating cuz it right there it surged like she wants to go sooo bad! Lol

You may have weak fuel pressure, either through a failing fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump, or fuel filter. Most of what you're describing, happened to me. Replacing the FPR helped, but replacing the pump did the full trick.

The BCS, when triggered by the PCM, will allow boost-side pressure to the bottom of the boost control actuator (BCA), which makes it open the valve and dump boost. You can take the bottom vacuum line off the BCA and see how it acts then. If it still won't do full boost, there's a vacuum problem with either the BCA or somewhere else nearby in the vacuum lines/fittings. The PCM will trigger it if there's spark knock, during heavier shifts, in reverse, and maybe while revving the engine in neutral.

Something to note: The PCM doesn't see the boost levels. The MAP is only for the dash gauge. You can unplug the MAP sensor and everything but the boost gauge will act the same as before.

I have unpluged all vacume lines to the bcv and the bcs still boost flutters??? If i jam the bost valve down to prevent bypass valve flutter i should get full boost at what rpm?

Leave the top line on the BCA. Just so it can act like it should.

In general, being a positive displacement pump in a fixed ratio to engine speed, you'd have full boost all the time if the BCA is always closed. Though it does get a bit more efficient as it spins faster, so it'll climb a little as engine speed increases.

The fluttering is what mine did when the fuel pump was at its weakest. And it got worse with heat.

And if i dont have full boost? Ill replace the map/boost sensor. Then if if i still dont have full boost?? Chargers ever get weak? I just cant see that somtimes it will do full boost. So the charger has the cability....

Fuel pressure specs are in here:

performance/topic1660.html

The SC won't get weak. It'll either function like it should (BCA/BCS function aside), or it'll fall apart (rarely). If bearings go bad, it may make bad noises. But it'll keep spinning until it fails to be able to spin. And that occurance will be very obvious.

Me, I'd be looking at fuel delivery and vacuum issues. Make sure the line to the bottom of the MAP is connected and not cracked. Check all the other lines for leakage. Maybe think about getting a professional cleaning done on the injectors. I'm not talking a fuel system cleaner. I'm talking removing the injectors and sending them to someone that has a sonic injector cleaner.

Ok now ive got the old snapon brick on it. It has a knock count of 10 in a 6 min drive. Ill keep you updated. It uses fuel like a pig! The o2 is switching amd she goes into closed loop. Im gonna really look at fuel like you said. Still flashes boost problem 57.

10 isn't a huge number, but probably higher than average. Did you try with all the vacuum lines in place except the one that goes between the BCA and the bottom of the BCA?

Could the prom be from a non boosted 3.8?? That would fire the bcs when i expects the 3rd egr valve on a non boosted 3.8...

I'm not sure what would happen if an L27 prom were in the PCM.

Can you get a video of the boost gauge during driving?
