Year and Trim: 1995 SE
A acquaintance has a transmission that he said should work in my 1995 Bonneville, but it is missing the ID tag.

The only numbers on it he could find was 737 (on top), CFD 737 (on the side), and 24200287 hydramatic. I'm assuming these are all case/casting numbers and won't give me the info I need.

Without the tag, is there another way to identify the year and gear ratio of this transmission to see if it will work?

thanks

There's a metal tag on 60-es that sometimes get lost. If any of those numbers are on that tag, you can find the FDR from that.

I'm assuming there's no access to the vin or RPO codes (spare tire cover) from the doner vehicle?

Otherwise we might be able to narrow it down from the doner car/trim and if you pull the diff.

Hi..thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately the tag is missing and the car it came from has been scrapped.

I texted the guy that owns the trans to see what vehicle it came out of. I haven't heard back yet..I do remember he said the year is a 1995..I'll update when I find out the make and model.

thanks

The guy texted me back and said the transmission came out of a 1995 Buick Regal LS (he probably meant GS) non supercharged.
Would it work if the ratio was the same as my Bonneville? how can I tell what ratio it is since it is missing the id tag?

thanks

A 95 Regal is series 1, 95 Bonneville is series 2. 95 was a weird year the trans are unique to that year & OBD 1.5. I have a 95 bonne se I know. I was wanting to use a 00 regal L36 as doner car but only thing same was block.

I'm not sure if the LS came with the 3.1 or 3.8. If it's a 3.8, it'll work because it's the same diff and chain ratio. If the LS came with the 3.1, you could swap your 3.06 FDR diff into that trans to make it work. But.. this is a risk because in 95 they did some weirdo reverse pitch gear stuff that was 95 specific. There's a change that depending on when either trans were manufactured, they could have a different pitch.

I actually just found this link: There uses to be an older article I used to reference and I guess this took it's place.

My original transmission is Opt F17 Code 5ASW 2.84 ratio. The regal I think is a W body w/ 3.06 ratio so it doesn't look like it will work. It's a shame that you cant tell the computer to "ignore" the slight ratio change..ugh!
Judging by the info at the website you linked the only transmission that will interchange with the 5ASW is a 5YMW.

the hunt for a transmission continues I guess

thanks for the info guys

Since the Regal only came with the 3.33 or 3.06, you have the same chain ratio 35/35 in the 2.84. You could always try swapping your old differential into the Regal trans. Just be aware of the risk mentioned already.
