Hello! I have a problem with my '92 SE, 3.8L, mileage 150,000.
When the engine is cold (in the morning) it starts but doesn't rev up. After 5min. of idling, when it warms up a little, revolutions reach 2500-3000 rpm but can't rev up any more - the engine chokes with a blasting/backfiring sound in the exhaust manifold. When the car is hot everything works properly but gas consumption went up by 30%.
Any ideas what may be causing such problems? Could anyone help please?

My guess would be the catalytic converter is clogged. Is the check engine light on?

The check engine light is not on.
The catalytic converter was replaced 50,000 miles ago along with the oxygen sensor. We use the car very occasionally and drive only for short distances. We also have a code scanner (this one) and it doesn't indicate any problems now.

hi, you can jack up the car and undo the 4 bolts going to the front of cat convertor - enough to let a fair amount of exhaust out - if the chocking goes away, the cat is probably to blame.

If you have a simple vacuum gauge, you can test it very easily.
Hook up the vacuum gauge, bring the engine speed up to 2500 RPM and hold it there.
If the vacuum starts dropping, then you have a restriction in the exhaust.
If not, the trouble lies elsewhere.
Youtube's Eric the Car Guy has a video on it here http://www.ericthecarguy.com/faq/solving-automotive-performance-issues?start=8

Hi, unfortunately the problem remains. Cat converter *isn't* clogged.
Cold engine starts and stops after a while, or starts, idles, there's that blasting/backfiring sound in the exhaust manifold, and then stalls. After idling for 15 minutes and getting warmer, the car revs up, doesn't stall and the sound doesn't occur. At ca. 180 degrees everything works quite normally.
Any other ideas? :(

you can try unplugging the maf - it is on top of the throttle body and may have a,b,c, on it. unplug it and see if its better

Are you able to get a video of this happening?
