Hi there, I own a 1993 Bonneville SE and this is my first post here. I've been having a strange problem with the engine for a while. The ignition starts fine and then the engine operates within the 1500-1700 rpm. When I accelerate (engine still cold), it kind of chokes (with muffled backfire-ish sounds...) and won't go past 2500 rpm. After a longer drive this is no longer an issue, everything works nice and smooth. I've replaced the fuel filter recently but it didn't help and I'm running out of ideas.
I'll be grateful if someone can give me a hint/suggestion how to sort it out. Thanks!

Could be the throttle position sensor. Any codes?
When cold the engine is in closed loop running enrichment mode.....possibly fuel related.

I also wonder if the MAF is to blame. If you unplug the MAF, does the issue get better or worse?

Thanks for your suggestions 2000Silverbullet and RJolly87. The engine service soon isn't flashing so I can't read any codes. I haven't tried unplugging the MAF yet.
Today it got even worse, I could hardly start the engine. Then I noticed some red oil underneath but it's hard to figure where it's leaking from...

Red oil is transmission oil. I'd try to get under there and find out where it is leaking from. Depending on where it is leaking from could help solve your problem
