How can I tell which mounts are bad? When I take off in 1st gear, I can hear a clunk and then it goes.. same thing if I downshift to slow down.. clunks then slows down. Sounds like a mount/mounts are bad

For the front trans mount: get someone to help you and have them watch to see if the mount pulls apart while you put load on the engine in drive with your foot on the brake.

For the driver's side rear trans mount: repeat that process the best you can with the car in reverse. Look for excessive engine/trans movement at the corner.

For the passenger engine mount and the passenger dogbone mount, they typically fall apart when failing.

Looking at your sig and info, I only see a GTP. This is for a 92-99 Bonneville, right?

Those mounts are completely different. Disregard my instructions.

I'll let other people chime in who own or have owned a 97-03 W-body.

W-body mounts: Engine are a mount under the HB (torque axis type) and two braces on top. Trans also has a mount directly opposite the engine mount (again torque axis type). I recall that my brother had to change both of the lower mounts on his car, they were a nasty hydraulic oil mess, but the upper mounts were fine. You should still be able to see the lower mounts separating if you follow the instructions on torque-braking the engine above (I'd think). The uppers shouldn't really move much, definitely should not have any slop.
