Yeah, it's freezing rain out today. And the '93 SE decides that it doesn't want to start.

Security light does the bulb check, then stays off. Won't crank. I have an aftermarket theft deterrent system, and the +12v from the ignition switch is hot there. I can't get to the starter enable relay (because they never go bad, right?) but I checked at the P/N switch and it's not getting to that point.

I hotwired the starter motor, it started and died. So both the starter relay and the fuel relay are bad at the same time? No.

Does the VATS module go bad like that, without illuminating the dash light? I hate VATS now.

Most likely the VATS is fine. Dont hate it.

Does your theft system include a remote starter?
When your talking about the starter disable relay are you talking about the aftermarket one?

No, all the aftermarket stuff is in between the VATS starter enable relay and the ignition switch. That was the first thing I checked after the battery connections. The aftermarket unit does not have a remote start. All the aftermarket relays are working. I get +12v into the VATS starter relay and nothing at the P/N switch. I do hear a relay up behind the gauge cluster near the windshield clicking when I turn the key.

This car is such a troll...

Bypassed VATS with a signal generator, only to find the starter now has a problem with the brushes (even though it didn't when I hotwired it). 3 hours of freezing rain later, it's finally fixed.

Glad you got that fixed... I smoked my starter a couple of years ago... I was amazed it even started the car...

So it had a gear reduction starter motor. Is there a source for brushes/bearings/parts for those? I could use the one from the LeSabre that was broke in the accident as a parts donor, but I'd rather rebuild this one with new parts.
