Engine is out of a 93 SSEi. I am putting the engine back together but have hit a snag. The No 4 main cap has a groove on each side where a stick seal fits to seal the cap to the block. The new seals protrude out past the edge of the cap by about 1/16" and there is no way they will fit between the cap and the block without being damaged.

Anyone have a tip on how to fit this together or should I just RTV the groove and side of the cap? Thanks.

Found the problem.

Originally I purchased a Fel-pro gasket/seal kit No. CS 9644, the main cap seals from this kit would not fit. They measured .260" thick. The groove in the cap measured .214-.229" deep. I picked up a separate Fel-pro rear main seal set no. BS40621, the seals measured .226" thick and they fit easily between the cap and block.

The only other difference of note is the seals in the first set were made in Mexico. The correct parts were made in the USA.

There may not be someone that knows of this issue specifically. Could you post pics of the problem?

I've never posted a photo before but I'll give it a try.

Here's a pic of the No 4 main cap. The seal (fel-pro) which fits in the groove is too wide to fit between the cap and block without being damaged.

00beast thanks for the photo instructions.
