Year and Trim: 1998 I do not know level of trim
Hi,
I hope this is in the right section.

My son bought a car yesterday and he never checked for air :banghead: . Anyway, I took him up and got some R134a for it and put it in for him. Within minutes the car looked like it was overheating, the "steam" was coming around the radiator but the pressure gauge did not move. When you turn off the ac the steam stopped. It also came back into the car, it got slightly foggy. So it must be the condenser, or so I am assuming.

Since we are flat broke from him getting this car, the air needs fixed does this sound like something that needs a mechanic or something we can put seal fix in? Is there a way we can pinpoint if it is condenser or a seal?

Thanks,
Samantha

At this point that system is pretty far gone, it definitely requires evaluation by a shop. They'll charge the system with a UV dye and try to find exactly what seals are leaking, or if the condenser or evaporator are damaged.

If the system was overcharged, it's possible that you've got blown seals. IIRC, these cars take 2lbs of refrigerant, and it only takes a few extra ounces to cause damage.

Thanks, I have charged about 4 vehicles and never had this problem. I only put 1 1/2 cans in it, 12 ounce cans. The gauge read completely empty when I started, then read full when I stopped.

Thanks
