I have a question that i have been meaning to ask. Is it normal that when i give the car full throttle (floor it), it reaches 6,000 RPM (Yellow area) then shifts before touching the red area? My last motor shifted at 5,000 RPM before shifting. Is this just because the motor was freshly rebuilt?

The L36's redline is 6000 if I'm not mistaken.

So it shifts before it hits the red? Sorry...this is the first car i have owned that has a working tach. So this is normal. Does this cause any damage to anything?

Your just making the tranny work harder, and shortening it's life.

:withstupid:

theres no real need to run a stock L36 past 5 grand..its really power range is in the mid area of the tack(2500-4800)..so pushing it to redline serves no purpose and can only cause further damage to the motor/trans

thats just my two cents

5800 is usual max, iirc. Hopefully Don chimes in, I don't know with your 1997 with the programming.

First..... No thats not normal, but most of the tachs in these cars don't tell the truth... They are there to give you a general idea... With the stock 97 PCM its forced to shift at 5600 iirc meaning it will actually shift at 5800... You tach may be a couple hundred off showing almost 6000....

Second, the stock L36 has a HP peak of 5200 .... I personally spin mine all the way to 6000... The old L27 made its 170 Hp at 4800, but it spun to 5200 in a lot of cases...

Third, The 4T60E can handle 6000 Rpm shifts.... When you get to say 6200 you are not doing good.... This would be a reason to figure out how to adapt a 65 Pump... Much Beyond 6000 is pushing the limits of the 60E pump...

If this car had the intake mods, exhaust mods, Ported Lower and the like I would say spin it to 6000( 5800 forced for a 6000 shift )

Being that this car is a 97 I think the number one thing on my list would be dumbing down the torque management above all... would make the car a lot more driveable...
