Just curious what people think about using a 1993 Bonneville to pull a 1700lb Volkswagen with tow straps? Only like 30 miles or so. Ive certainly read of people pulling more...with similar drivetrain cars.

I am thinking of installing an external transmission cooler for obvious reasons...

I pull my 1700lb trailerhome with my '87 Olds Delta 88 with no problems, it has an aftermarket trans cooler. Never a bad idea to fit one IMO.

If you just want to tow for one time I think your car would cope just fine. Take it easy, and remember the car you are towing won't have power brakes if its engine isn't running.

Roger.

I pulled a Triumph TR6 on a trailer with my Mitsubishi Gallant from Los Angeles to central Illinois with no problem, so I think you'll be OK!

If you have a good trans cooler, a 3500 Lb Hitch, and can do the 30 mile jaunt safely... I don't see why not...

You have a 93 SSE, so you already have the 3.06 gears and if you have Heavy Duty Cooling you may have a trans cooler already....

Does your load level work?

You're pulling via tow-rope? Should be fine, but you're gonna have to be really careful about the following car, two-way radios work best for communication, etc. Check local laws, I know in MN it's illegal to pull a car via tow-rope on state high-ways and interstates, so you may need a more rural route.

I'd be more tempted to use a tow dolly for 30 miles....

:stupid:

It's a light enough car, you could get away with it and likely not damage anything provided your hitch can accommodate the weight.
