After 5 or 6 high speed runs to check on KR values I got a code 406 EGR Pintle valve position. I've got 1 replacement gasket. I also have an old EGR valve I removed when I thought it was bad 5 years ago but wasn't. I replaced it then. So, Willwren said cleaning the EGR valve from a 94 SE is probably not going to help, there isn't much you can do by cleaning a 94 EGR valve. So I have the code and an old valve good when it was removed, but dirty looking. And I have the newer valve which may or may not be good. With my one gasket which one do I clean and reinstall? Can I reuse the new EGR gasket if the EGR valve I try first doesn't work?

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

If the gasket doesnt have any damage you can reuse it. It only takes about 5 minutes to remove anyhow so if you hear a leak you can replace it later.

I cleaned the old one put it on with new gasket. I drove around quite a bit today and it only came on on one trip (instead of every trip). Do I need a new EGR or is there another possibility for DIC 406?

Any time you change any part on the car, plan on using a new gasket. This is a basic rule that applies to every part on your car. The EGR gaskets are fragile, steel mesh coated in soft lead. They are not expensive. EGR leaks are the same as vacuum leaks.

If you have an EGR code, change the valve. It's that simple, especially since you messed with it and the symptoms changed slightly. This is common sense.

A word of wisdom for you though, this will not have an effect on your KR issue, as the EGR is not active at idle or WOT. The possibility of inducing a vacuum leak by not replacing the gasket CAN make your KR worse though. If there are other gaskets you've overlooked over the past year, you better go after them now for that reason. This really isn't something you need to be asking about. Change a part, buy the right gasket. Everyone on this Forum does the same.
