Getting ready to drop the pan and change the filter. Which transmission fluid should I use in my 98 SSE:

1) Dexron III

or

2) Dexron VI

Thanks

I really like Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc in my Buick's transmission. Dex-VI just didn't work well with my car when I tried it.

III is what the factory put in it.

I don't recommend Dextron VI in a trans not designed for it. GM says it's compatible, but there have been a good number of failures that can only be traced to VI. Either III or Max Life.

If it came with Dex 3 stay with Dex 3.

Don’t be fooled Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc has changed and is now Dex 6 compatible. I tried it in my 96 Regal and after a few months the trans started whining with mushy long shifts. Changed the filter and refilled with Castrol Dex/Merc and all is back to normal so far.

Dex 6 fluid is thinner and slicker than Dex 3 so why risk using it in a Dex 3 trans?

Maxlife changed viscosity to be compatible. Otherwise it's unchanged. It claimed Dex-VI compatibility with the previous, thicker formula while noting it didn't meet the viscosity spec.

I know I've run it for 1.5 years and 30k miles in my car with no issues, and many others are reporting no issues either.

Went a head and put the MaxLife in. So far no problems and it shifts fine. Always gives me goose bumps whenever I mess with the transmission fluids. Sometimes you wonder if you should leave a sleeping dog if nothing is wrong to begin with.

I've used Maxlife in my Dex III 4L60E. Really nice fluid, I'll probably use it again.

I didn't notice any issues while using Dex VI in the same transmission, but upon reading this thread I probably won't use it again. Just as well since the stuff costs twice as much as anything else anyway.
