I know this is a bonnie forum, but I'm having trouble with a 93 olds 3800. Heard a ticking morning start up. It went away after about 3 seconds. Four miles down the road began to run rough. Hearing a prominant tick. Possibly a muffled knock. No engine light. No smoke. Car stalled once at traffic light. Started right up. Had to drive about 4 miles home. Car still starts right up.
Rod? Wrist pin? Piston slap? Please tell me it might be something simpler or less expensive.

It's a little too far away from me to hear it clearly.

Let us know when you idle the car and narrow down where it's coming from and what conditions it's louder/quieter.

Check crank pulley first for rubber tearing.
Cracked Exhaust manifolds are a possibility.
Depending on miles maybe timing chain slap.

After further investigation it sounds like a very loud clank with a loud inconsistant squeak.. Seems to be higher up. With a stethescope on the valve cover it is more prevelant over cylinders 4 and 6 (middle and left side closest to firewall/drivers side). Atleast thats what it sounds like to my untrained ear. Speeds up with accleraton . Inconsistat though. Tap, tap....tap,tap,tap.......tap,tap. Got something dripping on the exhaust manifold (coming from cyl. 4) Can't tell exactly where it's coming from or what it is. Probably oil?. No smoke from tail pipe. Oil level, coolant level ok. Crank pulley seems ok. Hope this description helps.

Sound kinda like the lower end (rod bearings) noise, but not 100% sure. How is your oil pressure?

HOLY CHIT Batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you been changing the oil? How often brand & weight? Mine just rolled over 278Kmiles and sounds a whole lot better than that. - BC

Man, I'd be scared to drive that car sounding like that. I think there's a really good chance that 2000GreySSEi is correct. I'd really like to "hear" what willwren has to say. He, Jrs3800 and a couple others would be better able to tell you than I can. - BC

I haven't driven it in 3 months. I replaced it with a 99 Bonneville SE. It was suppose to be my sons car, he just got his license. I thought about replacing the motor but, I've never done that and don't have the tools or the know how. Had a couple offers to replace with used motor for about $700 with fluids but, It's 18 years old. I think I might junk it and get something else.
