A friend of mine has a 98 buick lesabre (L36), and has an intermittant hesitation problem. For example he tries to accellerate (like onto the freeway) and the car does not go unless he really punches it after a couple seconds. But otherwise the car seems to perform normally. Does this sound like a common problem that anyone has heard about? Are there anymore questions that I can ask my friend to give you guys an idea of what is happening?

First, ask your bud if he suspects an engine or a transmission problem.

Like, is it revving then "banging into gear" (suggesting a trans problem), or is the engine coughing / lugging / not revving up when the pedal is pushed (engine issue)?

my 97 l36 was acting funny a while back, with similar symptoms as you described. I cleaned the maf sensor with crc maf cleaner, and it was like a whole new car. for the 5 bucks, and 5 mins to do it, it may be worth a shot.

it's not a trans problem at all. The engine acts like it will die when the throttle is depressed, then "snaps out of it" and goes. The dirty MAF sensor makes sense to me and I told him about it, we'll see how cleaning that works. Thanks for the input, I'll keep you posted on how that works.

Also consider cleaning the entire throttle body. My old 99 SE would do the same thing. I corrected it every time with a throttle body cleaning.

We just cleaned Jordan's TB last weekend (pics in Your Ride).

Jordan, I have a can. Have him drive the 12 blocks tonight about 5 or 6, and we can blast it out quickly and look at the IAC seat.
