I went to start my 96 ssei and it didnt want to crank it did nothing. All the acc came on but wouldnt crank. I was at the resterant , so I didnt have any tools. I played around with the wires that go to the starter, and the car started like it always did. Now I got the security LIGHT on all the time its solid, it does not flash NO CODES

WHAT DOES THAT LIGHT MEAN OR DO. Can everything be related. :helpsmilie: What can I do 8-[

Is the key clean? Sometimes it may not have a good connection with the resistor in it. In my case the previous owner of the car had a remote start and they had to over ride the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) with a resistor on the wiring for it. It has an orange cord with 2 white wires in it, see if you can follow it and find any loose connection or damage to the wire.
When there is a bad connection that will make the security light come on and the car won't crank.

you can try to do a VATS bypass on the car...

http://vats.likeabigdog.com/

that'll help

if that doesn't work it might be the VATS module

It may not be related to VATS at all, and your security light may be something totally different. If it were VATS, playing with the starter wires wouldn't help you.

Remove the carpet from underneath the trunk lid and inspect the mechanical cable going to your lock cylinder (tamper cable). If it's broken off at the lock cylinder, disconnect the ground wire farther up from it. That's the most common cause for the security light.

I only mention the VATS bypass because that's what I had to do on my 94 SSE. It worked for me. And really, it's not making the car too much more susceptible to theft...A thief could build a simple device with two terminals, 15 resistors and a dial. Bam. Instant VATS bypass for any car.

There are MANY causes for the security light. Had it been a VATS failure, playing with the starter wires would not have helped him. Let's do more troubleshooting before we start modifying circuits.

Finally took the time to check the cable that goes to the lock it looks good.
I took it off, cleaned it, I placed it back on. Theres always a nice LIGHT ON.
What else could turn on a security light on?
What can I do to turn it of?
Is the security light only for the alarm system?

By the way the car goes great.

thanks

VATS is a joke. If a thief wants your car, he's going to get it.

When my security light stayed on full time, I used an ohmmeter to read the resistance on the pellet on the key, bopped over to Radio Shack, and bought 5 resistors for a buck. Took perhaps ten minutes to wire one in. Tossed the other four resistors in the glovebox and forgot about it; never had another bit of trouble.

Use the search function to find the various threads on the subject.
