My 1996 Bonnie shudders in OD. Its most noticeable when doing 70mph up hill somewhere around 2200rpm and 2300rpm. It is more prevalent when its warm out (70F). If I give it more gas it downshifts and it goes away, if I put the car in regular D it dosent do it at all. I also get the same shudder at different speeds usually low RPMS up hill when the car is in OD.

Could it be a misfire? The trans works perfectly in every other gear.

Transmission fluid is nice and pink. ;)
Reving the car in neutral produces no evidence of a misfire.
There is a CEL, but plugging my obdII scanner in does not work. My scanner dosent receive any power. Result of an alarm that has since moved on?

I stumbled across this thread which meantions OD issues.
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=1683

I got the readings from the secondary coils

6.7
6.15
6.10

There is a difference between the top and the bottom two coils, but is it enough to worry about? The primary coils I cant seem to get a solid reading on any of them, not sure if I'm getting a good connection. Going to try again when the sun returns.

Those coil numbers look fine to me.

Your symptoms, to me, sound more like bad torque convertor lockup clutch action.

I have three sets & none of them vary that much.
Set #1 > 5.70, 5.73, 5.78 - These 3 are from an L67.
Set #2 > 5.81, 5.84, 5.86
Set #3 > 5.87, 5.84, 5.91

Lets say it is the torque converter. What are my options? Is it a common problem? Is one year better than another? Is it going to require a wheel barrow full of cash?

I have no problem dropping the trans myself.

If you can drop the trans yourself, a remanufactured Torque Converter is $300-$400, IIRC.

I'm a little hazy on the details, but I think the convertor clutch can be serviced without replacing the convertor itself. I'm not sure how to exactly diagnose it either.

I have the very same symptoms on my 95 SSEI. I doubt the problem stems from the transmission as I just had my transmission overhauled. I took insurance through Progressive and they put out a list of tech bulletins on your vehicle posted by GM. There is one dated Sept, 2005, NHTSA number 10017568 concerning these symptoms and you can probably find out through a Pontiac service department what the bulletin contains. Good luck

To rench jeep: We are not talking about when GM dropped Pontiac. We are trying to solve this guys problem. If you read my response carefully you will see the tech bulletin was dated 2005. However GM Pontiac dealers still have archives on technical matters on any of their products including discontinued lines for at least 10 years [-X

Right you are, old flyer. Sorry. I do miss the old Pontiac sign at the dealer, though!

As an aside, I had a shudder under same conditions in OD with my wife's 99 Crown Victoria at about 130k. I dropped the trans pan, drained the TQ (not possible with our trannies?), replaced the filter, refilled with fresh fluid and a product called Dr Tranny Instant Shudder Fix. Well, it worked for me.

I am not one to go for "snake oils" like this, but I did not want to rebuild the trans or replace the TQ if I didn't have to. So far, so good! 2 years and 20k later, shudder is still gone! Now has 149k miles. Time for another tranny service. I will do the same again.

Check eBay item 120390737459.

I am in no way affiliated with eBay, Lube-Gard, or Dr Tranny. Apart from using the products!

Please let us know what you find. Maybe this can help others?

Does your tranny have symptoms like this>>> http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12868&p=136395#p136395
This grand prix now has over 8,000 miles on it since the repair and still working perfectly.
