Year and Trim: 95 SSE
I have a 95 Bonneville SSE 3.8 with a bad transmission. (second gear is gone and third is slipping) I am replacing it with one from a bone yard. As near as I can tell, Park Avenue and Olds 88 transmission will swap. However, there are 2 options available, FW2 3.08 ratio and F17 2.84 ratio. How can I tell which transmission is actually in the car. Will the different ratio work OK?

Looking at the post for the SSEI transmission issue, viewtopic.php?f=19&t=16430&start=0 and researching on line it appears that a 94 transmission may work as well but I'm uncertain of the wiring. The bone yard first gave me a 94 Buick 3.1 transmission but the wiring on the shift selector is different. Returning it tomorrow, they said they would give me another from a Bonneville but I want to make sure the ratio is not an issue?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Is your 95 SSE a NA?( 3800 series II )?

If so you have the FW2 3.06 Ratio... You need to find a 94-95 FW2 3.06... That will make it the easiest..

92-93 and 96-97 3.06 modes can be made to work, but its a little more work..

Yes it is NA. Not sure if it is 3800 series II.
How can I tell if it is a FW2? My feeling is it is as the car has great performance.
The bone yard had a couple of 95 SSE's NA 3800. (one is a very nice car, noted on the window is an intake leak. I would fix it if it was mine)

All SSE's with the Series II are FW2 3.06...

You will find FW2 on the spare tire cover... and iirc the trans tag will be 5BXW

Struck out on the local bone yard tranny. They had a 95 Olds 98 with a 3800 II but it had 212K on it, just a bit more miles than I trust. Starting the search a little farther out. At least I know a bit more what to look for now. Thanks Jrs 3800
