I just bought my 97 SE a few days ago. The previous owner told me he thought the car has keyless entry, but he was never able to get it to work. Is there a way to check if the car has the keyless entry feature? He did give me a remote that he thinks goes with the car. It is obvious that the remote is broken, the battery will not stay in place and I will have to buy a new one anyway.

The back of the remote has the numbers:
GM/UTA 25628814
FCC ID: KOBUT1BT
CANADA: 1983 101 393

I have seen some remotes on various websites with the p/n GM/UTA 25678792, and the one I mentioned above for my car. Which is correct, or will both work? I'd like to get this working if possible, unlocking doors the old fashioned way really sucks!

Any dealership parts department should be able to tell you what part # remote you need if you give them the VIN. They go through part number changes sometimes, so the dealer is the best bet for getting the newest version.

I don't remember how much detail on compatibility the ads go into on Ebay. But I bought one and it worked fine after getting the car to learn the remote's code. It was cheap and and came with instructions. Just another option. The dealer would have all the facts.

EDIT:
I don't know how long this Ebay link will be good, but you can search "97 Bonneville remote"

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_kw=97&_kw=Bonneville&_kw=remote&_ckw=SE

Check for RPO code AU5 [CORRECTION: AU0, see post below, thanks Don!]. If you have it, then buying a compatible remote and programming it should be all you need.

If not. . .
. . .then your 97SE would be like my 97SE. It has electric door locks, but doesn't have the keyless entry. If you buy an aftermarket car alarm, it can be wired to your electric door lock circuit and to your electric trunk release circuit to give you those features using the car alarm's keyfob remote. (You can choose to also install the alarm's noisemaker horn if you also want an alarm.)

Generally, these aftermarket alarms can be purchased fairly inexpensively ($100-$200 or so) and are a simple and straightforward way to add remote keyless entry to your non-keyless entry Bonneville. They even sell keyless entry systems only, which are basically the same thing but without the alarm noisemaker.

I've used Clifford and Avital aftermarket alarm systems without problems. Crutchfield (and others) sell various brand alarms that can all do this.

AU0 would be remote Keyless entry... Being that you have a 97 SE

If you have a Code 1SB car chances are you will not have keyless entry, If you have Code 1SC then you should have keyless( it may not always be the case, but the majority of 1SC's will have Keyless ).. If you have a 1SD( 1SD would be the SLE Option Group ) you have keyless...

I have looked for this elusive AUO RPO code and cannot locate it. You guys know where it is normally located?

The RPO code lable is usually located either on/under the spare tire cover, somewhere in the trunk or inside the glove box.

Looks like this Image

Thanks for all your help! I found the codes, AU0 and 1SC so we're good! Just got to get a new remote.
