We need to reclassify 1992-1999 Bonne's to Classic (hard to find parts) status.

So after getting lucky at the local church bazaar and scoring a bottle of reserve Chardonney, I loaded it into the green trunk of the Grizz.

I slammed the trunk closed.

BANG!

:bluetwitch: OMG...........my wine!!

I open the trunk expecting clear drippage everywhere.

......to find a broken trunk hinge spring.

Temporary fix was found at Home Depot.

My wife picked out the perfect prop.

It's a discontinued part and no local yards have anything older than 10 years. :angry4:

My grandpa had that happen to his bonnie a while ago, he used the same fix as you did for quite a while.

I thought I read somewhere that the torsion springs are different between 95 and below and the 96 on up.

The GM parts manager tells me it is specific to only 1994.
It's one of three left side spring/hinge assemblies made for that model and they are all discontinued.

The scrap yards have nothing over 10 years as they get more for scrap ($300/car) than they can get for parts, so they crush them all!

I can definately find a 94 locally and pull them off. Let me know what you would be willing to pay and I can start researching.

Haro to the rescue!
Thanks man!

It depends on the cost of freight but I'd be willing to spend up to $100

There is one yard around here I haven't checked yet cause it isn't open on Mondays (like most shops around here  )

I'll let you know tomorrow.

I can't believe the spring is only specific to 94's. Maybe the weight changed? Maybe that was the only year that doesn't pop all the way open. The 94 will stay closed when unlocked. It's handy for tripping home with an open trunk so it stays mostly closed and doesn't pop all the way open.

I can't believe how heavy that trunk lid is.

It must be over 100 lbs!

The rear spoiler makes up 50% of that!

The last scrap yard I checked out today seemed promising.

All they had that was even close was a 94 Delta88 Olds.
It looked similar but not exactly the same. I had to take the rear deck out to access 4 bolts. :angry4:
See Haro's pic. There are no jogs in the long rods like in the pic but I took the entire assembly out of the car anyways. So I'm not sure it will work. If it does, it might not have enough spring to keep it open.
I noticed that the diameter of the rods are smaller with the Olds. Its trunk was much lighter and no wing.
They only charged me $20 so not a big loss.

So I'm still interested in the correct piece from a 94 SSEi.

Interesting to see this. One of the trunk rods broke on my 93 last year and I just replaced it last week with one from the 95 parts car I had. They were identical and I can finally start using the trunk again. By the way I replaced it with only taking the nut off the rear bolt and dropping the one side down to slide the rod in. :)

So you can install the rod without hinge removal??!! :eek2:
Tell me how you did it. What did you use to load the spring into position?

Ok the rod that broke was the one that runs through the drivers side hinge. From what I could tell there is a nut right there by the trunk lip which is the one I removed. The other mounting bolt from what I can tell is screwed in through the rear deck in the cabin. I could be wrong but all I could see was the tip of the bolt coming through and no nut. Anyways I first removed the tension on the passenger side using a deep socket on the rod. Pull over out of the slot and push forward. There is a small tab that holds the rod to the hinge just bend it out a little and it will slip out. Then with a friend or a rod make sure the trunk stays open take off the nut on the drivers side and the hinge will drop down to the edge of the stud. You will have to push or pry it down far enough to sneak the rod out. Just reverse to put back together. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I had to put this to bed before my daughter comes this weekend to become the new owner of the Grizz!

I spent the morning removing and replacing the entire hinge/spring assembly. I had salvaged it last year from a Buick and the yard didn't charge me because I did it myself.
It sat on my shelf so long because I wasn't sure it was going to work because the springs are much smaller diameter due to the lighter Buick trunk lid and I couldn't find the time. Should have done it sooner and saved myself four stitches in the head! :angry4:

It works fine.

The only issue is that it's Silver and not Green but hey, I've left my mark.

I moved both springs to their tightest position and it works exactly the same as the old unit when it wasn't broke.
Took me about 2 hours because I was being over caution as to not break the back window.

No more stick to hold the trunk lid open. Saves about 2 lbs of dead weight. :P

:beerchug:

Just for info, the diameter of the OEM 94 SSEi trunk hinge springs is .300"
The diameter of the 94 Buick Lesabre hinge springs I used is .260"
Very noticeable by eye but I had to mic them.
