I guess one hasn't made it into Techinfo yet. Here's one for an 87-91 to get you started.

Thank you.

I am hearing a noise from the water pump area when engine is cold. Very familiar with the different serpentine/pulley noises these cars often make. Running a gator back, no coolant leak yet- so my instinct says the wp is going to give way. Rather do it now before winter sets in. I have about 50k on the current pump.

hi there

in my experience..once the car warms up hold the top radiator hose with one and and the bottom with the other at the same time..and if they feel the same tempature your aterpump is fine..especially with 50k on the clock..one thing to watch for idk if its common on s2 pumps but my l27 the press was lose and the pulley cover was rattling/squealing when cold..once it warmed up or if you were above idle it was fine...then one day it fell off at 70

Some things I know will be different than that stuff.

You'll have to support the engine from underneath and remove the engine mount on the belt side.
There's a coolant elbow or two that like to snap. I don't know to much about their specifics, but new ones wouldn't be a bad idea. I think there's one that goes between the accessory bracket and the front cover.

you do NOT need to remove the engine mount. Get under there and look at it first.
I don't know why everyone says that, I changed the Water pump on my 97 SE without removing it.. easy as pie. :helpsmilie:

Thanks for all the replies. I will feel the temperature of both hoses when fully warmed to see if they are equal. And also check for any loose pulley covers.

A friend of mine gave me this tip. Take a sawed off wood broom handle (or equivalent) and place it on pump when running. Basically, use it like a stethoscope and listen for any bearing rattle inside the pump.

On the '97, I'm certain the plastic elbow is push on and I'm not looking forward to dealing with that part.

In fact, I dread having to do any maintenance anywhere near the serpentine tensioner bracket.

I'll post my findings about the hose temperature and stethoscope "trick".

Thanks again

When you remove the pump, you will notice four of the bolts are longer and larger diameter. IIRC, these thread into coolant passages. So, when you replace them, apply some thread sealant to prevent coolant from seeping out along the threads. May be able to find a couple of images of a series II water pump on and off.....

Until we get a write-up in Techinfo, you might want to consider buying a Chilton's 28200 to provide you with step-by-step instructions. Your public library may keep it so you could check it out for free.

The sound is a whistle, if you remember the old tea pots you put in the stove to boil water. That's pretty much what it sounds like. Not a squeal, chirp, wine or screech but a whistle. After about 2 minutes it disappears. But when there it increases in pitch as you open the throttle.

I performed the stethoscope test and heard no bearing rattle.

Waited for full warm up and both hoses are very hot. The lower hose took its sweet time to get as hot as the top hose but eventually both were about equal.

I'm thinking now that its the smooth large metal serpentine guide pulley on the water pump making the whistle and not the pump itself. That's the only pulley I never changed and the sound appears to be emanating right from that location.

But you know how its easy to get fooled trying to pinpoint these types of sounds.

I guess that I'll hold off for right now.

Cars only got 105K, but we still use it all the time and I'd hate to get left at the roadside. :angry4:

for what its worth i agree with ryan...i changed my pump on the l27(wbody regal) and i changed on on a l67(93 ei ) and i changed one on a 03 gtp (s2 l67) and NONE of the times did i have to remove anything but the pump itself and of course the belt

The GTP and Regal don't have a mount there anyway. And I know you cannot access all the WP bolts on a 92-95 L67 without removing that motor mount and the accessory bracket. I thought 96-99 had a similar mount in the same place? The one have have to take the bolt out of to put a new belt on?

To replace serpentine belt on 1997 Bonneville, you do indeed have to remove the bolt that goes through the motor mount.

Does that mount block removal of the water pump?
