I have a 93 SE with 163,000 miles that had been running great, transmission shifting smooth until yesterday. I had a transmission cooling hose leak yesterday. I pulled over and parked. Lost fluid but was able to repair leak. After fixing the leak, I put in about 4 quarts of generic replacement fluid for dexron III and mercon since you cannot buy dexron II anymore. Forgot when I put it in that I had put in Dexron VI when I changed fluid/filter about 25,000 miles ago. Noticed it started shifting hard when transmission would change gears. Changed fluid and filter today with 6.5 quarts new generic "dexmerc" fluid, which is supposed to be replacement for Dexron II/III. Still shifts hard when transmission changes gears. Anyone have any idea why and what I can do to make the shifting smoother?

i don't imagine that you can truly reverse the problem without rebuilding, but i do know that i've had great luck with lucas trans fix and high mileage transmissions. it thickens up the fluid and tends to smooth out shifts and minimize slips. be sure to siphon some old fluid out of course.

Check the vacuum line going to the vacuum modulator valve for transmission fluid inside the line. There should be none. If there is any, replace the valve. Fluid in the line means the diaphram inside the valve is leaking.
