While driving along car will just quit for a second and continue on. Sometimes the chime will sound and sometimes not. This happens maybe once every 3 or 4 days. In the past, the car has just shutdown at highway speed and I would put it in neutral and it would start right up. The VATS has been bypassed by the way. I am thinking ECM as there is no check engine light. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

When you say shutdown, does the entire car's power die also or just the motor?

Reason being is, I had my car turn completely off once and then it started back up, turned out battery terminals were corroded.

This was caused by a bad PCM on my 95.. but the 95's are known for having flaky PCMs, and i wouldn't think it's as likely on a 99. Sounds exactly like what I had though. You could also check all of your ground points, and battery cables.

the list of causes is long. The fix for my 97 with this condition was fuel pump. Another recent case tried the fuel pump and was unsuccessful. Could be fuel pressure regulator, crank sensor, bad battery connections, etc.
in your case, do you lose lights/radio/any electrical when this happens. it could still be a bad/intermittent power connection

I "third" the battery cables, insomuch as it is the most common and easiest thing to check. Had this happen a few times on my 1999 Olds eighty-eight. Keep in mind that mine looked fine, then I removed them and found they were a mess inside.
