My castellated nut came off my Drivers side outer tie rod end joint. The threads were bunged up when I pounded on the stud end with a hammer to loosen the joint. I never got the nut tightened well enough during reassembly and it must have sheared off the cotter key.

I think that since the threads are damaged I should just go for a new tie rod end. Whattya think? And also, should a pay the extra $8 for the moog or just go with the McQuay Norris?

thanks

I'd go with the Moog. You're either supposed to pound on the control arm on the flat spot or use a pickle fork. NEVER pound on the threaded end.

1. I like Moog.

2. Use a pickle fork next time. Bad juju to pound on suspension components.

3. Don't drive the vehicle until it's properly repaired.

#3 is a biggie huh?

I've got a pickle fork and tried it , but get this: it turned out that the knuckle weighing outward was binding the tie rod end joint. When I lifted up on that the joint fell loose, yeah, now ya know 8-[

Bought the moog tie rod end, $30.00 with discount. Went on in 40 min. Drives fine. Thanks Bob Dillion and 00Beast

I need a professional rack alignment for sure. But it still jumps erratically on potholes. I think I need to put her up on stands tomorrow and see what is going on. I hurried through the steering reassembly after I swapped the the transmission to get in before dark Sunday before last.

I still felt unsure about the steering. So I checked the right side. That tie rod's end was coming loose now. I tightened to spec and used a finishing nail on the nut for a pin. I also retorqued all my frame bolts. It drives normal now. It still feels like each bump is a whole lot different.
