The Emergency Brake (plastic) Cable that attaches to the E-brake mechanism just snapped and now I can't release the E-brake. I need another way to release the E-brake so I can "get home for the Holidays". Thanks.

If you can get under the car, you can disconnect the two rear e-brake cables at the frog that joins them to the main cable (which is the one that is probably siezed up.)

If you can't get under the car, take the rear wheel off, then the drum, then disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever and leave it hanging. Do the other rear wheel the same way. That will release the drum brakes and allow the car to move until you can get a new cable.

If you go with removing the rear drums to release the brake cables, you will need a mallet and block of wood. Tap the drum off the hub a little at a time..alternating between the front and rear edge of the drum with the block of wood to keep from hitting the drum directly with the mallet. The reason: The brake shoes are up against the inside surface of the drum..you gotta walk to drum off the shoes.

Seriously, if you can get under the car (about where the rear doors are) and cut that one cable to release the two rear parking brake cables, that's the way to do this quickly. (use a piece of wire, shoelace, zip tie, or anything else handy to tie the loose cables up to the body of the car so they don't hang down and get caught on anything.)

Yeah, it's the Olds. And it is the rear drum brakes that are ON!!!I forgot to mention that I'm at work and I don't have access to any tools. Well, what can I do with a pair of scissors or a couple of ball point pens??? What would I need to disconnect/loosen that "frog" connector? I would rather not cut the cable if at all possible but I do want to drive home (preferably before it gets dark - Uh-oh, the sun is slowwwly setting).

Better call AAA then... at a minimum you need a pair of stout pliers with cutters. I wouldn't sweat cutting the main cable, if it snapped on the pedal end already, then it is really junk at this point.

OK, before I send out for the Calvery, I'm going to try and borrow a set of pliers from a maintenance person here and see if I can find a way to release the mechanism.

SUCCESS!!! I was able to release the E-brake just by pure luck (literally). The hush panel blocked my view. But I was able to feel my way near the release mechanism, found a cable, and just pulled on it. It was thee cable that released the e-brake. I'm on my way home. See you after the Turkey Holiday with another thrill packed epsisode. I'm going to have to FIX this cable thingy eventually.
