Yes so my 1989 SSE is close to getting a new rebuilt engine! Got one from scrap yard, out of 1 1990 Buick Reatta. Had block gone through, just needed a cross hatch clean up of cylinders. Had a sweet 3 way head valve job done too. Everything else stock , same cam, pistons, crank. All properly cleaned and installed. Opinions on initial start up, oil to use, length of time for short oil changes? I know to stay away from Fram filters. Was thinking once she is broken in to go with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. But my mechanic friend wants me to initially use a staright 30 wt oil first, then change it and filter after 500 miles. Any suggestions?

The Fram filter thing is a nonsense. Use tough guard or ultra guard and be happy you have as good a filter as you can get.
No need to overthink it, use whatever oil is recommended on the filler cap, 5w/30 or 10w/30 should be fine. Straight 30 oil won't get round the engine as quickly as 5w or 10w on a cold start - the last thing you want.

Pre pack the oil pump with vaseline or a light grease, and spin the engine with the spark plugs out until the oil light goes out to get oil round the bearings before firing it up.

Change the oil and filter after 500 miles.

Enjoy driving your car.
Roger.
