Year and Trim: 1991 Pontiac Bonneville
I recently bought a 1991 Pontiac Bonneville from my sister that has been her car since 1991. Good maintenance records and oil changes every 2000 miles. She only drove it 22 miles to and from school where she teaches with 8 of those miles on gravel roads.

I drove it back to my home, 240 miles of highway driving. I was driving through a canyon at 70 mph and during a turn, the vehicle shut off and I lost power steering and brake pressure. Growing up on a farm and thinking fast, I put it in neutral, started her back up and kept on driving. (I bought this for my 16 year old daughter who just got her license and was following me in my car) This happened 9 more times on the way home. When I drove up a larger hill, I lost air conditioning and the engine would only give me 27 mph. When I crested the hill, I got the speed and the air conditioning back.

With 30 miles to go from our home, I had to limp her back slowly (20-25 mph is all I could get). Whenever I stepped on the gas, it jerked violently and kept dying on me.

I took it to a mechanic and they could not replicate the issue and ran just fine. I had the computer read at my local O'Rielly's and they could not find anything.

When I drive it the 30 miles to town, it purrs down the road very smoothly.

I do not feel confident in letting my inexperienced teen daughter drive this car. It frustrates me to no end when the mechanics that looked at it say nothing is wrong.

Youtube and Google say it could be the Mass Airflow Valve, but the mechanics say it's not.

I am not as learned in the mechanic field as all I know is how to change the oil and can replace a starter if need to.

I am hoping someone here can maybe advise me on an issue that they know about so I don't have to spend tons of money on things that are not wrong with it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd test the fuel pressure when it's cold and just started, then drive it around till it's warm and starts doing the same thing and test again.

I would also check in to the catalytic converter to make sure it's not plugged up.

The fuel strainer falling off the pump or broken and loose baffles in the gas tank are possibilities as well.

JUST FOR FUN, YOU CAN UNPLUG THE maf sensor and see if it changes issue.

Check the ground bus connections that may have rusted. Mine did on my 97 Bonneville and caused intermittent stalling and windows opening slowly, or not at all.
There's a ground bus next to each of the front doors, under the carpet right next to each door.
You'd have to remove the plastic covers over them, next to each door, and then unwrap the black electric tape that's wrapped around each ground bus.

Also, I had a borderline fuel pump (40 psi). Spec for a 97 is 40-47 psi. and is different for yours I think. It also caused stalling when my car was warmed up. If my pressure dropped any further, then it might have gotten worse or not started at all, I dunno.

Anyways, good luck!

Actually, my Haynes Repair Manual might be wrong about my 97 Bonneville fuel pump pressure. It says 40-47 psi, but typical pump specs for it are 51 psi.

So, I'm not sure if my pump is borderline or way too low.

In any case, I'm going to replace my tank, pump, sending unit, etc because after 165K miles it's about time I did it anyways. It should run better afterwards.

My car runs great now, after I replaced my old fuel pump (40 psi) with a new one (spec'd at 100 psi). No more starting, stalling or hesitation problems.
If you're still having a stalling problem, you might want to check the fuel pressure at your fuel pump output.
