I was about to take a trip last week.
I filled up on gas and hit the road. I noticed the car kinda jolting every time i slowed down and accelerated.
Then i made a right turn, slowed down at the light and it cut off.
Everytime i put it in Park it crank up,then when i went to Reverse or Drive.. It would shut off.
I finally held the gas.. Rev'd the Engine and pulled into a parking lot.
I let the car run for about 15 minutes and drove back home but the car wouldnt shift until i got past 40 MPH.

Went out of town for work.. Just got back today..
I tried to drive it and now it wont even switch gears.. Im guessing im doomed. #-o
Anybody had these problems.. Thanks for any feedback.

hi, did you make sure tranny fluid is clean, unburnt and to proper level? if it is low, check for leaks.

my 93 cutlass S had a bad tranny leak at 340,000 and would act similarly - kept it full and she lasted until I had to say bye 6 months later.

My experience with the 440-t4 - the 3rd sprag failed then locked up. That's what the jolting was while you were driving, the sprag not rolling smoothly because it's self-destructing, causing harsh/clunky/erratic shifting between 2-3. Then you finally got going fast enough to get into 4th gear that locks up the sprag. When you come to a stop, you're stuck in 4th and the engine can't idle. If you rev it in gear the sprag will pop, basically breaking completely, and you have 1st gear back, but should have lost 3rd gear as all the rollers would have fallen out at that point.

A telltale is metal glitter in the trans fluid, or metal chunks in the pan when you drop it for the fluid change.
