Help  I was feeling good having replaced the two front mounts and the right rear then I attempted to remove the left rear trans mount. I got it totally unbolted but I can not remove it. I read the service manual and it does not reference removing anything other than the mount itself. I carefully raised the engine and got more play but not enough. My next attempt will be to remove the steering link. I am close. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't you just love helpful info like that?

Here's an old thread about this topic. Looks like unbolting the rack is what's needed.

I hope it's nothing like a '92 SSE. If it is you have to loosen everything the transmission and engine are bolted to (mounts and dog-bone) and "slide" the engine and transmission forward enough to "slip" the old mount out and the new mount in. IIRC, you have to undo the bolts holding your targeted mount from the transmission first - very tight fit for 1 bolt. I got compression fractures in 3 vertebra doing that (sliding the transmission and engine), so be careful, that is if it's like a '92. - BC

Thanks 1oldman and MKMike. MattStrike gave me the same advice as MKMike. Once I unbolted the rack and pried it upwards, I was able to get the mount out. Oh, I forgot to mention a lot of swearing went down too. I was glad to see a separation between the rubber and the metal on this pain-in-the-butt mount. I think the other three I replaced were probably still good but at least I got 4 new mounts. I hope after I tighten everything down and I do my test drive that I have a smooth shift from park to reverse without the clunk. I also painted and installed new front calipers along with black zinc drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads. I've got to break the rotor and pads in. I will be glad to stand upright after tomorrow.

I am happy to report the following was accomplished in the last week:

new alternator & serpentine belt
new set of ac delco platinum professional plugs
new drilled/slotted rotors with black calipers and ceramic pads for the front
all 4 engine/trans mounts (this was not fun)
replaced about a foot of fuel line that was cracking, not leaking (no more gas smell in the garage)
greased the front end

The best part is everything seems to working :) The sad part is the annoying clunk as I shift from park to reverse is still present. My '88 Toro did the same thing. I wonder if this just isn't normal for the '87-91 Bonnies. Oh well, I am not going to worry about it. Thanks for all that gave me motor/trans changing advice.

Sounds good,
I don't remember any clunk in reverse of my 90 SSE.
Guess would be upper dog bone or exhaust knuckle near fire wall?
