Battery died today....when I went to open the hood the release cable broke off just at the hold down point. I pulled off the grill and the secondary safety release. I see the back side of the hood release, but there is nothing to activated the release, and not much room for a hand or arm to get to it. All the bolts are, of course, facing the firewall-----what now...my only thought now is to hack saw off the hold down mechanism and head to the junk yard.----Any other thougths first before I do so, or anyone had this problem. First time in my life I've dealt with a problem of this nature.

This is a good one. I am sure it has happened to someone before, but I am not sure how to tackle it. I just looked at my 89 Bonneville and here is a picture of the latch and cable connection:

The space to work in:

The latch is mounted between the AC condenser and radiator with only a couple inches between. To top that off, the mount underneath is a solid plate with a few drain holes.

I have no idea how to get to it. This makes me want to inspect mine real well.

AH HA! I got it.....I got a coat hanger and put a small hook at the end, then began to "fish" around the back side of the latch---I had to take grill off etc.....etc..... Then after about 30 seconds I was able to hook onto something and pull....and the hood popped open. I then wrapped the end of the coat hanger around the latch lever and the other end of the coathanger thru the slats in the grill.....this now is a temporary fix until I can get a replacement cable.
