When i was driving my car for like 20 minutes earlier today i noticed smoke coming from my a/c compressor and then when later i went to start the car my belt snapped. Does anyone know are a/c compressors easy to fix yourself or do you need to have a mechanic do it and also can you just get it put on without charging the system with freon and just compressor oil? please help me i am trying to save money. thanks

This section is for performance ADDING topics, not for mechanical problems. I'll move this to the proper mechanical section (87-91) for you.

you will have to obtain another compressor. if you are going to change it yourself, you should first have an air conditioning shop or dealer evacuate the freon that is now in the system. your present system is configured to use R 12 freon. there are kits available at auto parts stores for converting to R 134A freon. once you have installed the new compressor, you will have to evacuate the air from the system before charging it. again, if you don't have the tools to do so, an AC shop can do it for you.

this post is just to familiarize you with some of the steps. it is actually quite an undertaking if you have never worked in this area before. it is possible to do it yourself. the club can help you.

if you have a shop or dealer do the entire job, probably count on $400 to $8oo depending on used, reconditioned or new compressor.

if you want to try it yourself, consider it a learning experience that will help with future AC problems.

I'm not sure how the belts are on that setup, but you could either just bypass the A/C with a shorter belt, or remove the compressor and run an A/C delete pulley. Those would be your 2 cheapest options.

IIRC the bypass is a 73" Belt

i just within the past couple month posted a thread on doing a a/c bypass with pictures. i replaced my compressor with a bypass pulley and used the exact same belt and have had no issues with it since.
